Apple prepares a dramatic makeover of its operating systems

According to Bloomberg, Apple is working on a "dramatic" makeover of the iPhone, iPad, and Mac's user interfaces. This version contains new icons, menus, apps, and buttons.

Apple's latest big UI change came in 2013 with iOS 7, which replaced skeuomorphic elements with a flatter style. Now, with iOS 19 and iPadOS 19, Apple is preparing another major graphic makeover.

This update will be included in the future macOS 16 release. It is likely to be the largest update since macOS Big Sur. Aside from a revamped UI, this upgrade brought the Control Centre to macOS for the first time, as well as privacy improvements.

Along with the impending UI update, the business intends to improve navigation and controls, drawing inspiration from VisionOS. Circular app icons, translucent panels, and a more user-friendly window management system may appear in iOS and macOS. However, features like as hand gestures and rich 3D depth will remain exclusive to the Vision Pro.

Apple intends to unveil the redesigned designs at WWDC in June. The idea is to make migrating across devices in the ecosystem easier by using a more consistent user experience. Currently, there are notable variances in how icons, menus, and programs appear across Apple's operating system.

Apple also hopes that this revamp will help revive its slow iPhone sales, especially after the unexpected 5% drop after the last holiday season.

Nonetheless, this upgrade should not be interpreted as a merger of Apple's key operating systems. According to Gurman, the company aims to improve Mac and iPad performance by keeping their operating systems independent. Another benefit for Apple is that it encourages customers to purchase both smartphones rather than just one.

Apple has been experiencing some turmoil. Aside from falling iPhone sales, the business is also postponing the debut of its Smart Home Hub due to Siri upgrade development delays.
