Short-form videos are popular these days, and every social media platform is participating. Reels were introduced by Instagram a few years ago and have since become extremely popular. However, there is a privacy issue, as Instagram is now allowing everyone to download Reels from accounts that are public.

If your Instagram profile is public, anyone can download your Reels. Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri explained that the option to download Reels has been available in the US since June 2023, but it is now available to everyone across the world. Previously, downloading Reels required the use of third-party applications and web browser extensions, but Instagram now offers the feature directly. This would increase data security for anyone downloading these short-form movies, but it could be a nightmare for those who posted the Reel in the first place.

While this feature is enabled by default for all public Instagram profiles, you can prevent users from downloading your videos. If you do not want others to download your Reels, you can turn off the option while uploading them. You can accomplish this by following the procedures outlined below:

  • Record and edit your reel, and then tap Next in the bottom right of the phone's screen.
  • Tap More Options at the bottom.
  • Scroll down and tap Advanced Settings.
  • Now, scroll down to the Allow People To Download Your Reels option. Now, disable the toggle if you don't want people to download your Reels.
  • Choose whether you want to turn on/off the option to download reels for all your videos or only for the one you're currently uploading.
  • Now, tap the back button on the top left and hit the Share button at the bottom.

Instagram has disabled this feature by default for anyone under the age of 18. Furthermore, only new Reels uploaded through a public profile will be available for download. Your previous Reels will not be available for download from the Instagram app until you explicitly choose the option to make your entire profile public. TikTok users can also download videos from the Share option.
