The US government filed an antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft in 2001, saying that the company had abused its monopolistic position by combining its Internet Explorer browser with its Windows PC operating system. The lawsuit was eventually resolved in 2007.

However, Microsoft seems to have begun to promote its browser over Google Chrome, based on a different strategy. The company has added a new feature to Microsoft Edge that prevents users from downloading Google Chrome.

That is, if users browsing the Edge decide to install Google Chrome, then many messages will be displayed encouraging them to stay on the Edge. Microsoft Edge may not prevent users from downloading Google Chrome, but it redirects them with misleading buttons.

Many different messages can be sent to the user if he visits the Google Chrome download site, including "I hate saving money", "Microsoft Edge is the best browser for online shopping", "That browser is so 2008! Do you know what's new? Microsoft Edge? »,« Microsoft Edge runs on the same technology as Chrome, with the added trust of Microsoft ». These messages are accompanied by a call-to-action button, such as "Shop smarter now".

It is worth noting that the Google Chrome browser is used by 52.5% to 66.7% of Internet users, while the Edge by 3% to 4.6% of users.
