Redefining the foldable form factor: Inside Xiaomi’s ambitious new flagship

In a move calculated to steal the spotlight right before competitors unveil their own next-generation hardware, Xiaomi has officially unveiled the Xiaomi 18 Fold. Breaking away from the tall, narrow aspect ratios that have defined previous generations of foldable devices, this latest release adopts a wide-style design language. The shift gives the flagship a far more natural, smartphone-like feel when closed, while opening up into an expansive workspace that functions much like a compact tablet. Among its standout aesthetic choices is the headline-grabbing Cherry Red colorway, signaling a clear push toward high-end luxury aesthetics.

At the core of the Xiaomi 18 Fold lies the Xring O3, the company's proprietary in-house processor. Replacing off-the-shelf components from third-party silicon providers, this custom SoC represents a strategic pivot toward complete ecosystem integration. By pairing the custom silicon with next-generation memory configurations—ranging from 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM up to 16GB of ultra-fast LPDDR6 memory—the device delivers rapid app execution and sustained performance under demanding workloads. Running HyperOS 4 atop Android 17, the phone offers seamless multitasking and AI-assisted performance, supported by internal storage options reaching up to 1TB.

Display engineering remains a central focus for the new foldable. The exterior features a 5.38-inch panel guarded by Shield Glass 3.0, engineered for enhanced drop and scratch resistance. Unfolding the device reveals a 7.58-inch primary display with a 2:1 aspect ratio, optimized for media consumption and split-screen productivity. Both screens feature smooth 120Hz refresh rates and peak brightness levels reaching 4,000 nits, ensuring complete visibility even under direct outdoor sunlight.

The imaging capabilities are equally ambitious, led by Samsung's 200MP ISOCELL HP5 main sensor, which utilizes advanced pixel binning to optimize low-light clarity. Accompanying the main sensor is a 50MP periscope telephoto lens offering 3.5x optical zoom and 7x in-sensor lossless magnification, alongside a 50MP ultra-wide lens for expansive group and landscape shots. Video calls and front-facing media are handled by dual 16MP camera sensors embedded in each display.

Powering the device is a high-density 6000 mAh battery containing 20% silicon content, allowing for significant energy capacity without adding bulk. The phone supports 67W wired fast charging and 50W wireless charging, ensuring quick power top-ups. Remarkably, despite the complex hinge architecture and large power cell, the Xiaomi 18 Fold achieves a profile of just 5.02 mm when unfolded and 10.68 mm when closed, weighing in at a lightweight 219 grams. Launched exclusively in China starting at 10,999 yuan, the device stands as a bold showcase of in-house hardware engineering, though global availability remains unannounced.
