One of the top video game series of all time will return with a new sequel in 2022 by its original creators. That goes to Ron Gilbert's Monkey Island, which is considered one of the most important point-and-click adventure games that defined this category.

Ron Gilbert wrote and directed the first two episodes, The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, but then left Lucasfilm Games. In 1997 the release of the third installment (The Curse of Monkey Island) was without him involved.

He had said many times in the past that he would like to work on the Monkey Island series again to give his audience his own sequel for the 2nd episode, but discussions with LucasArts did not reach an agreement. The latter passed into the hands of Disney in 2012 and Gilbert had again asked to pay for the rights of both Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion.

Finally, today we come to the official announcement of Return to Monkey Island, which will be the sequel to Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, despite the fact that The Curse of Monkey Island is also considered a sequel. The new game features both Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman, who was the designer of the first two games, and later worked on the equally great Day of the Tentacle. Dominic Armato will once again give his voice to the protagonist, Guybrush Threepwood.

The production of Return to Monkey Island will be carried out by Devolver Digital, Lucasfilm Games and Terrible Toybox, with its release expected in 2022.
