iPhone users may now make WhatsApp their default app for texting and calling. The feature is available in WhatsApp beta for iOS 25.8.10.74, and it is being rolled out to additional users.
The implementation of the Digital Market Act (DMA) in the European Union has resulted in significant modifications to iOS. As a result, Apple was forced to open up its ecosystem to third parties, including allowing consumers to alter the default phone and messaging apps on their devices.
While the change was initially confined to EU customers, Apple later announced that all iPhone owners worldwide could change their default apps beginning with the release of iOS 18.2. Using this, WhatsApp is now attempting to increase its position in the iOS ecosystem and shift more users away from Apple's default messaging and calling apps.
When you designate WhatsApp as your preferred app for calling and texting, the device will launch the apps whenever you wish to start a discussion. If WhatsApp is your primary app for networking with your friends and family, this function is really useful. This also benefits those who utilise Meta-owned messaging apps for business purposes.
The capability is presently available to some beta testers via the TestFlight app, but it will be expanded to more users in the coming days. However, it is unclear when it will be available on the stable version of WhatsApp for iOS. After installing WhatsApp beta for iOS 25.8.10.74, you should notice its name in the iPhone's list of default apps.
To alter the iPhone's default apps, first navigate to Settings and select Apps > Default Apps. Then, find the Messaging and Calling options and tap on each to select your favourite app.
