TikTok is an entertainment platform that aims to inspire creativity and provide joy. The platform can be used by people aged 13 and over. Here are 10 simple ways to protect privacy and navigate the platform safely:

  1. Age-appropriate features: TikTok users must be over 16 years old to use apps like Duet or Stitch, and must be over 18 years old to LIVE, send and receive "Gifts".
  2. Protecting Teens. TikTok works to remove videos containing adult material or complex topics for users under 18.
  3. Family Pairing: this feature allows parents/guardians to pair their own TikTok account with that of their children to adjust safety and privacy settings.
  4. TikTok accounts only for users over 13 years of age: Only those who are 13 years of age or older can create an account on TikTok. The platform is constantly working to remove underage accounts that it has identified or that have been reported by third parties.
  5. Account privacy: Accounts belonging to people aged 13-15 are set up as private by default, so that users can approve the followers who will have access to their videos.
  6. Educational videos and instructions for teenagers: The TikTok Safety Center offers a series of educational videos and tutorials on privacy settings, bullying, eating disorders, online challenges and other digital safety topics. In addition, the Privacy Policy includes a dedicated section for teen users of the platform.
  7. Time management: Accounts belonging to users aged 13-15 years old do not receive notifications after 9 p.m., while accounts belonging to users aged 16-17 years old do not receive notifications after 10 p.m. Teen users can also customize a mute notification schedule.
  8. Cooperation with Organisations: TikTok works with dozens of organizations worldwide to identify potential risks and maintain a secure content environment.
  9. Community Guidelines: Accounts that violate community guidelines are removed from TikTok. Users can easily report content within the app.
  10. Ads: All ads on TikTok must comply with the Advertising Policies, which ensure that users only see age-appropriate ads. In addition, TikTok users in Europe aged 13 to 17 years old do not see personalised ads.
