Battlefield 6 has already cemented itself as one of EA’s most successful launches in recent memory, breaking records in both player counts and sales numbers. Now, the franchise is preparing to expand its universe with a new free-to-play battle royale experience, officially named REDSEC, short for Redacted Sector, set to go live tomorrow, October 28. The announcement promises to bring fans a fresh way to engage with the game’s signature combat, without any additional cost.
The launch of REDSEC coincides with the debut of Battlefield 6’s Season 1 content, which introduces a brand-new map and several new modes. EA and Battlefield Studios plan to release a gameplay trailer tomorrow at 8am PT / 11am ET, giving players a first look at the mechanics, visual design, and core features of the battle royale mode. While details remain scarce from official channels, community insiders and dataminers have been teasing the mode for months, fueling anticipation for what many hope will be a defining addition to the franchise.
Although the specifics about whether REDSEC requires ownership of the base Battlefield 6 game remain unclear, the mode is expected to stand on its own while maintaining the hallmark gameplay elements that fans have come to expect. Early community testing has revealed some features: each match will host 100 players, organized into 25 four-player squads. Players will have access to multiple classes, each with distinct loadouts and abilities, which must be chosen before the start of a round and cannot be changed mid-game. Victory goes to the last squad standing, the classic battle royale formula that drives tension and strategic decision-making. Whether solo and duo modes will be available has yet to be confirmed.
Staying true to Battlefield’s core identity, REDSEC will feature a massive, destructible map, incorporating the series’ signature environmental interactivity. Vehicles, including transport and armored options, will be available to traverse the battlefield and engage enemies. One of the most intriguing aspects is the shrinking map mechanic: early indications suggest this will be one of the most lethal “rings” ever introduced in a battle royale, instantly eliminating players caught outside the safe zone, ramping up the stakes and intensity.
Development teams emphasize that REDSEC is not just another standard battle royale. “We see a great opportunity to infuse the core Battlefield pillars of class-based squadplay, tactical destruction, and vehicle combat into the Battle Royale genre to create a high-stakes and adrenaline-pumping gameplay experience,” the developers explained last month. This approach promises to differentiate REDSEC from other games in the genre, offering fans a familiar yet elevated Battlefield experience where tactical decisions, squad coordination, and environmental manipulation all matter in determining the outcome of a match.
With 100 players per match and four-person squads, strategy will be paramount. Teams must consider class selection, vehicle deployment, and map navigation, all while adapting to the ever-shrinking arena. The destructible environment adds another layer of unpredictability, allowing skilled players to alter terrain to their advantage or destroy cover used by opponents. These mechanics, combined with fast-paced combat and the pressure of a shrinking play area, are designed to deliver a tense and dynamic gameplay experience that embodies the spirit of Battlefield.
REDSEC will be accessible on the same platforms as Battlefield 6, including PC (via Steam, the EA App, and Epic Games Store), Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. Players across these platforms can expect the mode to go live simultaneously with the release of the Season 1 content. The free-to-play nature of REDSEC represents a significant move by EA, potentially attracting new players while keeping the existing community engaged with innovative and high-stakes gameplay.
