Boston Dynamics has revealed that it will deliver a fleet of Stretch robots to DHL warehouses in North America over the next three years.

The Stretch robot, which is suitable for work in warehouses, has a small base with wheels and can move flexibly in a limited space. It has a folding arm with a smart handle that is equipped with advanced sensors and cameras, to automatically search and catch a wide range of boxes of different types. It can even operate in, and around disorganized stacks of boxes and lift fallen boxes.

DHL Supply Chain North America CIO Sally Miller said of the new deal:

At DHL Supply Chain, we are committed to continuous innovation and digital transformation to optimize the end-to-end supply chain. Investing in warehouse automation plays an important role in increasing operational efficiency and improving service for our customers. We’re excited to partner with Boston Dynamics to deploy its best-in-class robotics in our warehouses. The Stretch robot addresses complex industry challenges through flexible automation, which we’ll be able to replicate and scale regionally and globally.”

Boston Dynamics's $ 15 million deal with DHL is part of the company's Accelerated Digitalization strategy. DHL’s plans include expanding Stretch into other areas of its warehouse workflows with a view towards automating additional warehouse operations.
