OpenAI announced today that the ChatGPT desktop program for macOS is now available to everyone. The app and other upgrades were introduced at the company's "Spring Event" earlier this year.
The ChatGPT app for macOS is driven by the new GPT-4o model and allows you to query the AI chatbot using your voice. The ChatGPT Mac program, like its website, allows you to log in with your email, Google, or Microsoft account.
ChatGPT's desktop client is more accessible than its website because it can be launched from any screen using the Option+Space keyboard shortcut. A search bar similar to Apple's Spotlight feature appears, where you can type in your question.
The software accepts several forms of inputs. For example, you can upload a file, a photo, or capture a snapshot of a window or the entire screen. You can also choose a section of text in a document and prompt ChatGPT.
You can use the top menu bar to start a temporary chat, enable spell checking, and manage ChatGPT features like Memory, Archived Chats, export chats, adjust font size, and more. The left sidebar also allows you to access previous ChatGPT conversations.
ChatGPT for macOS has been available to premium subscribers since its release. In addition to macOS, OpenAI offers native ChatGPT apps for Android and iPhone. The company has previously revealed that a Windows desktop client for ChatGPT is also under development. However, interested consumers must wait until "later this year."
