In May, OpenAI finally released a standalone ChatGPT application. However, in an unexpected move, it launched the app first for the Mac platform. At the time, the company stated that a Windows version was in the works and will be released later.

Today, OpenAI announced in a blog post that the ChatGPT software for Windows was now available. However, the software is only available in a preview version to its paid ChatGPT Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Edu members.

The Windows version of the software includes some of the same capabilities as the Mac version, such as the ability to upload files and photographs, provide AI-created summaries for papers, and support for the DALL-E 3 AI image generator. It also provides access to OpenAI's most recent large language mode, the OpenAI o1-preview. You can also reduce the app's size so that it can run alongside other Windows apps.

That being said, the new Windows ChatGPT program has several limitations in its preview edition. It does not currently support voice commands, including the recently introduced Advanced Voice Mode. In addition, some of the app's integration with OpenAI's GPT Store is now unavailable.

OpenAI said a version of the ChatGPT software for Windows with the "full experience" will be available before the end of 2024. There is no news on when the app will be available for ChatGPT free users, but we expect it will be before the end of the year.

Earlier this month, OpenAI released Canvas, a significant redesign of its ChatGPT user interface for writing and coding jobs. Like the new Windows ChatGPT software, it is now only available to premium customers but will become available to free users after it exits beta development.
