Visa, a global leader in digital payments, and Rakuten Viber, one of the world's most trusted and popular messaging apps, today announced a strategic partnership to enhance Viber Pay. The digital wallet built into the Viber app is being enhanced with the addition of a virtual Visa debit card for app users in Greece. The partnership will enhance the Viber app for consumers, offering additional security and seamless functionality for payments on the platform through the Visa Direct service.

The new card provides Viber Pay users in Greece with a simple and secure way to shop online and manage their daily expenses through Viber Pay. It can also be used for international transactions where Visa is accepted, giving users the freedom to pay globally.

With the new virtual card, Viber wallet holders now have a seamless and secure way to make online transactions without the need for a physical card or bank account. In addition, fast money transfers via Visa Direct will be available in Greece through Viber Pay in the near future.

Sevi Vassileva, Vice President and General Manager of Visa for Greece, Cyprus, Malta, and Israel, said: "The launch of the Visa contactless debit card on Viber Pay marks an exciting development in digital payments for Greek consumers. Responding to the needs of today's digitally-savvy users, we provide the convenience, speed, and security they expect in every transaction, thanks to Visa's trusted global network and expertise in secure digital transactions. Together with Viber, we are committed to empowering users in Greece with more accessible, reliable, and seamless payment solutions that integrate easily into their daily lives."

Ritesh Shah, General Manager of Fintech at Rakuten Viber, added: "People want payments to be as easy as messaging. Our new Visa contactless debit card in Greece offers them the following: a unique card number that keeps bank account details hidden, real-time notifications for every purchase, and the ability to freeze, unfreeze, or delete the card in seconds, with 3D Secure for extra peace of mind. This is how we are upgrading Viber to a super app that makes users' lives easier and brings reliable, everyday services to one place.

The partnership builds on Viber Pay's existing capabilities, including free money transfers between individuals and Viber Pay Rewards. It further strengthens Viber's position as a super app, offering a comprehensive range of services that meet everyday needs—from communicating with friends and family to managing finances. The new updated version of the wallet is supported by Viber's new partner, Paynetics, a leading European embedded finance provider, thanks to its comprehensive e-money infrastructure.

The virtual card will be gradually rolled out to all Viber app users in Greece over the coming weeks, starting today. To access Viber Pay and use these enhanced features, all Viber app users, including those who already have a Viber Pay wallet, will need to update the Viber app to the latest version and complete the identity verification process. The service is available in Greece, as well as in Slovenia, Slovakia, Lithuania, Estonia, Cyprus, and Germany, making seamless payments available to everyone.
