The EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA) will enable the Epic Games Store to be available on iOS in Europe.
The Epig Games Newsroom account announced the move on Twitter / X, stating that they are pleased about expanding chances for creators across multiple platforms. This includes introducing the Epic Games Store to iOS in Europe.
Epic Games removed its popular battle royale game, Fortnite, from the App Store in 2020 due to Apple's policy of collecting up to 30% commission on sales.
Tim Sweeney, CEO and founder of Epic Games, praised Apple's decision to grant Epic Games Sweden AB a developer account to operate the Epic Games Store and Fortnite in Europe under the Digital Markets Act.
According to Sweeney, Epic Games Sweden AB, the Swedish subsidiary of Epic Games, will manage the Epic Games Store in Europe.
The official Fortnite Twitter and X account revealed the game's return earlier this year. However, the widespread availability of the Epic Games Store for iOS is a significant improvement over the initial statement.
The DMA, passed in 2022, is a significant piece of EU regulatory regulation aimed at managing the power of "gatekeeper" digital corporations and firms. The regulation aims to compel industry leaders like Google and Apple to "open up" their platforms and services to third-party developers.
It's worth mentioning, however, that the Epic Games Store will be unavailable on iOS in the UK for the time being. The UK's Digital Markets Bill may include comparable measures to the DMA for iOS users in the UK. The bill is presently being considered in Parliament, but if passed, it might allow Epic to make similar moves outside of the EU.
