Warner Bros. and NetherRealm have officially announced Mortal Kombat 1 via an impressive cinematic trailer, and confirmed that it will be released for Windows PC, Nintendo Switch, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on September 19, 2023, leaving PS4 and Xbox One aside.

The trailer sees Fire God Liu Kang after his victory in the Titan Age, as well as veteran characters from the series such as Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Shang Tsung, all with a newer look compared to the previous installment, Mortal Kombat 11, which was released in 2019.

From the small gameplay samples, some turns to the more brutal can be seen, visually the inspiration from the 2021 film adaptation is evident, and in general the graphics have been significantly upgraded. Although it hasn't been made official by the company, Mortal Kombat 1 appears to be based on the new and powerful Unreal Engine 5, but we'll wait for confirmation.

Overall, we're gearing up for a very strong year in the fighting game category, as we also await the releases of Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8.
