Netflix makes official statement about password sharing

After the confusing announcements and leaks of the last few days, Netflix has made an official (this time) statement about password sharing and how it will implement the new account sharing measures.

First, the company announced the expansion of the new policy to Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain, and it's noted that it will price extra users differently per account in each country. The difference you'll see below between Portugal and Spain is telling, despite the fact that both are part of the European Union and use the same currency.

Starting with the basics, account owners will be required to set a primary home address and all members of the same account will be able to normally have free access if they are in the same location (i.e. on the same WiFi network). Account owners will also have access to a new control centre where they will see an aggregated view of connected devices and users using the same account, of course having the ability to block or stop access as they wish.

If, now, they want to add an extra member to the same account (i.e. password sharing) they will only be able to do so if they are on the Standard or Premium plans and with a limit of just 2 extra members per account. The charge, as mentioned above, varies from country to country and indicatively in Portugal it is €3.99/month, while in Spain it is €5.99/month.

The company says that it will be easy to transfer the settings of the extra members (e.g. recommended, playlists, saved games, viewing history) to a new account and practically pushes previously jammers to get their own accounts.

So far it is unclear what will apply to those who travel and those who watch via data on mobile devices...
