In a recent corporate conference, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa provided an update on the company's intentions for the Nintendo Switch's replacement, as well as the status of the existing console.
Furukawa revealed that the upcoming "Switch 2" will be backward compatible with games created for the original Nintendo Switch. That implies consumers can continue to play their existing Switch game libraries on the new gadget. Furthermore, Nintendo Switch Online, the company's subscription service, will be made accessible alongside Switch 2.
While Nintendo has not officially confirmed it, the company has previously stated that the purported Switch 2 will be revealed to investors by the end of March 2025.
Nintendo also revealed some hardware and software sales numbers at the event. For the fiscal year ending in March 2025, Nintendo has lowered the current Switch console's sales prediction from 13.5 million to 12.5 million. This represents a 17% decrease in sales and up to a 69% decrease in profit over the same period last fiscal year.
In the six months ending September 30, it sold 4.72 million Switch consoles, compared to 6.84 million units the previous year. This drop, however, has not been reflected in the performance of several popular Nintendo Switch titles.
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom sold 2.58 million sales. In comparison, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold 2.31 million units, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door sold 1.94 million, and Luigi's Mansion 2 HD sold 1.57 million copies.
