Perplexity is shaking up the internet browsing world with the global release of its AI-driven browser, Comet, which is now available to everyone at no cost. The move signals the company’s intention to take on the likes of Google Chrome, Safari, and Microsoft Edge by embedding its proprietary answer engine directly into the browsing experience.

At its core, Comet is not just another browser with a sleek interface. It represents a new way of interacting with the web. Instead of typing search queries into a box and scrolling through lists of links, users can ask Comet questions in natural language and receive direct, sourced summaries in return. Highlighting a paragraph on any website can instantly produce an explanation, contextual breakdown, or concise summary powered by AI.

The goal is to shift online exploration from passive searching to active assistance. In theory, this means less time digging through search results and more time getting the exact information you need, right when you need it.

Comet first launched in July with a significant amount of buzz—but also controversy. Its top-tier plan, known as Max, carried a staggering $200 per month price tag. Despite the steep cost, Perplexity reported that millions of people signed up for the waitlist, eager to test the technology that promised to redefine browsing.

Now, just a few months later, the company has taken a bold step by opening up access for free. While this free version comes with limitations, it still allows users to interact with Comet’s sidecar assistant, a feature designed to provide on-the-go help while browsing. Paid subscriptions remain available for those who want deeper functionality and stronger AI models, but the barrier to entry has been removed.

Even at the free tier, Comet offers a wide range of tools. Personalized news feeds, project organization capabilities, and assistance for online shopping or travel planning are available to all users. The AI can suggest the cheapest concert tickets, locate the best direct flight for a chosen date, or keep track of tasks in an ongoing project.

For subscribers, the experience becomes more sophisticated. Those on higher-tier plans get access to stronger AI engines capable of handling more complex queries. Max subscribers, in particular, gain an integrated email assistant that drafts replies, categorizes messages, and helps maintain inbox order.

Perplexity has also developed what it calls “connectors”—integrations that allow Comet to interact with external workplace tools and data sources on a user’s computer. This means the AI can go beyond simply answering questions and actively take actions, such as sending emails or adding items to a shopping cart.
