A major change for content creators in YouTube is coming into effect today. The development team announced that the total number of dislikes in the videos will now be hidden, without of course removing the right of each user to downvote.

The rationale for the decision is to avoid targeted defamation, which can particularly hurt small-scale creators, as it predisposes other users to downvote more easily, while also influencing the algorithm used by YouTube, in order for their videos to appear in the recommendations.

Hiding the number of dislikes is targeting the end user, since the creator of the video will normally see the number for his own feedback. It's a good move, however, maybe other steps should be taken to help both users and creators even more. One of them would be to not be given the right to downvote if you have not watched a large percentage of the video.
