Apple plans to start selling parts and tools, as well as instructions for repairing its devices at home, rather than bringing them into a store or a third-party repair shop.
Apple plans to begin with the iPhone 12 and 13, followed by Macs equipped with M1 chips. Initially, you'll be able to change the iPhone's display, battery, and camera using Apple-supplied parts, with further options coming later.
Apple is calling the program "Self Service Repair," and it will debut in the United States "early next year" before expanding to other countries. According to the company, the program is exclusively for "individual technicians with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices," and that most customers should still require the help of a professional.
According to TechCrunch, making these repairs yourself will not void a device’s warrant. Apple intends to sell "more than 200 individual parts and tools." Customers will also be able to review repair manuals before purchasing parts from the company.
