In order to work on a game starring Black Panther, Electronic Arts established a new firm called Cliffhanger Games. Although they haven't revealed much just yet, EA describes the unnamed project as a "third-person, singleplayer" game set in a "expansive and reactive" version of Wakanda, the dystopian nation that Black Panther calls home.
Kevin Stephens, a former executive at Monolith Productions, the firm that created Middle-earth: Shadow Of Mordor, is the founder and CEO of Cliffhanger Games. In the statement released today, Stephens claims that the team is providing the players "more agency and control over their narrative than they have ever experienced." Unless they are building tools to modify actual life, I think he is referring about in-game control. Wakanda was described by Stephens as a "rich superhero sandbox," therefore the game might or might not contain an open world as well. To be fair, jumping across the city's roofs does sound like a lot of fun.
There are several video games in development besides EA's Black Panther. Black Panther and Captain America will fight Nazis in a cooperative video game, according to former Uncharted director Amy Hennig, who unveiled it last year. Right now, neither project has a name, making it difficult to distinguish between the two in the upcoming days, weeks, and months. Do not forget that one of them possesses Captain America. For greater brand recognition, the other one might have a different superpowered guest.
Black Panther had his comic book début in the 1960s, and T'Challa, the primary character, is usually the person in the snazzy costume. Since a monarch often has to make difficult decisions, the hero might make a good video game character. However, it will be interesting to watch how this game handles that royal judgment.
Over the following few years, EA and Marvel have committed to "at least three" superhero games, including this Black Panther game and an unrelated Iron Man project being worked on by Dead Space remake studio Motive. That might potentially open the door to a future Avengers-style crossover game.
