Rockstar Games has officially postponed the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, one of the most anticipated video games in recent history. Originally slated for a fall 2025 launch, the studio has now confirmed that the game will instead debut on May 26, 2026, pushing the title out of this year entirely and breaking the previously firm 2025 commitment.
The announcement was made through Rockstar's social media platforms, accompanied by a message apologizing to fans for the delay and thanking them for their continued patience and enthusiasm. "We are very sorry that this is later than you expected," the studio said. "The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game."
Since the release of the first trailer in December 2023, Rockstar has remained largely silent on further details about GTA VI. However, parent company Take-Two Interactive has occasionally offered updates during investor meetings. Despite previous assurances that a delay was not in the cards, today's news confirms that even the biggest names in gaming aren't immune to development setbacks.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has previously downplayed technical concerns, such as compatibility with the Xbox Series S, and has avoided commenting on the absence of a PC version announcement — something fans continue to question.
Rockstar reiterated its longstanding commitment to delivering exceptional quality, stating: "With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve."
Set to launch exclusively on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, GTA VI will reportedly feature the franchise’s first female protagonist and take place in a modern-day reimagining of Vice City. Rockstar concluded its statement by promising that more information about the game will be shared soon — hopefully providing fans with a clearer picture of what’s to come during the extended wait.
