Google is venturing deeper into the world of virtual shopping experiences with the launch of its latest experimental app, Doppl. Developed by Google Labs, the division responsible for testing innovative ideas, Doppl offers users the ability to visualize how clothes would look on them without stepping foot in a fitting room.

Building on the virtual try-on technology introduced earlier this year during the Google I/O developer conference, Doppl extends the capabilities of Google Shopping. While the original feature allowed users to try on clothes virtually by uploading a photo, Doppl introduces a more immersive experience. Users can now use photographs or even screenshots of outfits they find online or in real life and “try them on” through an animated, personalized digital model.

One of Doppl’s standout features is its use of AI to transform static images into short, dynamic video clips. These AI-generated videos simulate how the clothes would move and fit on the user’s digital self, offering a more realistic impression of the outfit in motion. Users can also share these clips with friends to get opinions before making a purchase.

Google described the app as a tool for creative exploration. “With Doppl, you can try out any look,” the company noted in a blog post. “Whether you come across an outfit from a friend, at a local thrift store, or featured in a social media post, you can upload a photo and imagine how it might look on you.”

That said, Google is clear about the app’s limitations. Doppl is still in an experimental phase, and users are advised to take its visualizations with a grain of salt. Factors such as exact fit, fabric texture, and precise garment details may not always be rendered accurately. The app is meant to inspire and assist, not replace the experience of trying on clothes in person — at least not yet.

Currently, Doppl is only available to users in the United States and supports both Android and iOS platforms. There is no confirmed timeline for a broader international release. To use the app, users must upload a full-body photo (clothed) or opt for a customizable AI-generated model to test different styles, cuts, and colors.

Doppl is part of Google’s broader push to integrate more interactive and intelligent shopping features across its platforms. In recent months, the tech giant has enhanced the AI-powered shopping experience in Google Search, introducing tools that allow users to browse, filter, and compare products more efficiently.

Among the other advancements is a newly developed “agentic checkout” feature. This tool automates parts of the buying process, allowing users to set parameters like size, color, and price range. Once configured, the system can track the item, monitor pricing fluctuations, and even finalize the purchase on the user’s behalf. It’s designed to streamline the decision-making process and help shoppers stick to their budgets without endless manual searching.

These innovations come at a time when many consumers are looking for more personalized, less stressful ways to shop — particularly those who prefer to avoid crowds or lengthy in-store visits. For them, Doppl could be a game-changer. It offers the chance to experiment with fashion choices and plan purchases more thoughtfully, all from the comfort of their own homes.

Whether you’re a fashion enthusiast seeking a digital wardrobe assistant or someone who simply finds traditional shopping a hassle, Doppl presents an intriguing step forward in how we interact with clothes online. As Google continues to refine its tools and AI-driven shopping experiences, Doppl may become just the beginning of a new era where your phone replaces the dressing room mirror.
