Instagram is releasing an update to its messaging system that includes numerous new features. These capabilities could help Instagram compete with direct messaging rivals such as Apple iMessage and third-party services.
First, there's music sharing. The upgrade allows users to share music in both one-on-one and group chats. Just open the sticker tray and select the "Music" option. This will open a search bar for Instagram's audio library. There are a few caveats here. The song must be available on Instagram, and clips cannot be longer than 30 seconds.
Direct communications will now include a translation feature that works in 99 languages. The functionality here appears to be really straightforward. Users simply need to hold down a message and hit "Translate." The translated message should show exactly beneath the original one. Easy breezy.
There's a new option to pin messages, photos, and even Reels to the top of a chat. Hold down the message and then tap "Pin." Instagram claims users can pin up to three messages each discussion.
Instagram will also allow users to schedule messages by long-pressing the Send button. This can be used to schedule messages for up to 29 days in advance. Finally, the platform has included the ability to invite others to a group chat using a QR code. All of these capabilities will be available to iOS and Android users globally starting today. A site update is in the works but not yet accessible.
Instagram has certainly been busy introducing new features to its platform. It recently started experimenting a dislike button in comments. The platform revealed that it was developing a video editing program comparable to CapCut. The service even increased the duration of Reels to three minutes, presumably to compete with TikTok.
