As Instagram now transfers all videos to the main app, after removing IGTV, it is incorporating new features to stay close to its competitors (see TikTok). The head of the development department, Adam Mosseri, announced that the automatic subtitles for the videos have started to appear and of course users will have the option to turn off this feature.

The automatic display of subtitles will free the hands of content creators, since until recently they had to go through subtitles manually, a process that is clearly laborious and time consuming. At the same time, both users with hearing problems and those who can not turn up the volume when watching videos e.g. at work or at night at home.

Currently 17 languages are supported (English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Arabic, Vietnamese, Italian, German, Turkish, Russian, Thai, Tagalog, Urdu, Malay, Hindi, Indonesian and Japanese), and as the algorithm is trained they will be added gradually even more in the coming months.

Users will find the option to automatically show subtitles for videos from the settings menu in the "Show Captions" section. It goes without saying that at this early stage there may be errors in both translation and grammar.
