Meta is rolling out expanded access to its AI-powered translation tools for creators on Facebook and Instagram, offering a way to reach audiences worldwide with greater ease. Meta AI translations automatically dub and lip-sync your reels into another language, allowing creators to communicate with viewers in their native tongue. This feature aims to break language barriers and help content reach new audiences that may have previously been inaccessible.
The system is designed to preserve the authenticity of your voice, capturing its unique tone and sound so the translation feels natural. Lip-syncing aligns your mouth movements with the translated audio, creating the appearance that you are speaking the new language directly. Creators maintain full control over the process, with options to enable or disable translations and to review or remove them at any time.
Initially, Meta AI translations supports English-to-Spanish and Spanish-to-English conversions, with plans to add more languages in the future. The feature is available to Facebook creators with at least 1,000 followers and all public Instagram accounts, providing a broad base of users with the tools to reach multilingual audiences.
Getting started is straightforward. Before publishing a reel, creators can select "Translate your voice with Meta AI," toggle the translation and lip-sync options, and share their content. Creators can also opt to review translations before publication, ensuring accuracy and quality. This review process does not affect the original, non-translated version of the reel.
Once a translated reel is live, viewers see it in their preferred language and are informed that Meta AI powered the translation. Users can control whether translations are displayed via the audio and language settings within the three-dot menu, including an option to disable translations entirely. Additionally, Meta provides a breakdown of reel views by language, offering insights into how different translations are performing and helping creators optimize their global outreach.
To maximize the effectiveness of Meta AI translations, creators are advised to follow best practices. Face-to-camera videos work best, with clear speech and minimal obstruction of the mouth. On Facebook, translations currently support up to two speakers, so overlapping dialogue should be avoided to maintain accuracy. Excessive background noise or music should also be minimized to improve clarity. Consistency is key: building a new audience in a different language takes time and repeated exposure.
Beyond automated translations, Meta now allows creators to upload their own dubbed audio tracks to Facebook reels. Each reel can support up to 20 custom audio tracks, enabling creators who already produce translations to connect with audiences across multiple languages. This feature mirrors the functionality of Meta AI translations, allowing viewers to hear reels in their preferred language and deepening engagement with diverse audiences.
To upload custom audio, creators navigate to the Reels composer in Meta Business Suite, select "Upload your own translated audio tracks" under the "Closed captions and translations" section, and assign each track to its corresponding language. Translated tracks can be added, replaced, or removed at any stage—before or after publishing—offering flexibility for creators to refine their content. Once ready, the reel can be shared, and audiences will automatically hear it in the language they have selected in their settings.
