Meta is taking a big step in blending artificial intelligence with social creativity by bringing its AI-powered photo and video editing tools directly into Instagram Stories. The new update allows users to type natural language prompts — such as “add a sunset,” “remove the background,” or “change hair color” — and watch as Meta’s AI instantly transforms their visuals.

Until now, these editing capabilities existed only through direct interaction with the Meta AI chatbot, which meant users had to leave their creative flow to experiment with image editing. But this new integration makes AI editing feel native to Instagram, giving creators a fast, fun, and frictionless way to enhance their Stories without leaving the app.

The new AI tools live under the “Restyle” menu, which can be found at the top of Instagram Stories by tapping the familiar paintbrush icon. Once inside, users can choose between “add,” “remove,” or “change” options to describe exactly what they want to edit.

Meta says you can ask the AI to change your hairstyle or color, add accessories like a crown or sunglasses, or even swap your background entirely for something cinematic — say, a glowing sunset or a neon cityscape. The idea is to give every user, regardless of editing skills, the creative power once reserved for professionals.

In addition to text-based prompts, Meta has also included a library of preset visual effects. These range from style transformations — such as turning a photo into a watercolor painting or adding a vintage film look — to more playful edits that can alter outfits, like replacing your shirt with a leather jacket or adding biker goggles.

For videos, the new AI system introduces dynamic effects such as falling snow, swirling flames, or shimmering light reflections, giving users more tools to turn short clips into visually compelling moments.

As with most of Meta’s AI-powered tools, there’s an important privacy dimension. When users activate Meta AI on Instagram, they automatically agree to the company’s AI Terms of Service. These terms grant Meta permission to analyze uploaded images, including facial features, in order to “summarize image contents, modify images, and generate new content based on the image.”

This means the AI doesn’t just apply filters — it interprets and reconstructs images based on contextual understanding. Meta stresses that this process enables more precise and realistic edits, but it also requires users to trust the company with significant data access.

The arrival of AI editing in Instagram Stories is the latest in Meta’s ongoing effort to infuse its platforms with generative AI capabilities and stay ahead in the competitive digital creativity race. The company recently tested a “Write with Meta AI” feature that helps users craft witty or personalized comments for Instagram posts — essentially an AI assistant for social interaction.

Meanwhile, Meta’s broader AI strategy continues to expand beyond Instagram. Last month, the company launched “Vibes,” a new AI-generated video feed available within the Meta AI app. “Vibes” automatically curates short video content using generative AI, and early results suggest it’s helping boost engagement.

According to data from Similarweb, the Meta AI app’s daily active users on iOS and Android climbed to 2.7 million as of October 17, a dramatic increase from around 775,000 just four weeks earlier. This sharp growth reflects both the company’s aggressive rollout of new AI experiences and the public’s growing comfort with using generative tools in daily life.

Meta is also making efforts to address safety and privacy concerns — particularly around how AI tools interact with younger audiences. Earlier this month, the company announced new parental control features that give parents greater oversight of their teenagers’ interactions with AI chatbots. These settings allow parents to disable AI-based chats entirely or monitor the kinds of topics their teens are discussing with Meta’s virtual assistants.

This move comes amid broader industry scrutiny over how AI influences younger users and what kind of data it collects. Meta’s decision to build parental safeguards directly into its platforms is likely intended to strike a balance between innovation and accountability.

With this latest update, Instagram is positioning itself as not just a place to share life’s moments, but as a creative AI-powered studio. Whether you want to transform your outfit, redesign your surroundings, or simply experiment with artistic effects, Meta’s tools now make it possible through a few simple words.

The update also underscores a growing trend across social media: users no longer need deep editing skills to produce high-quality, eye-catching content. AI is quietly becoming the creative partner behind every Story, empowering millions to express themselves in more imaginative ways.
