Earlier this year, Meta previewed Movie Gen, an AI video editing tool that appeared to be quite realistic. At the time, Meta stated that it was still a research project, with no imminent plans to make the capabilities available to users.

However, it appears that Movie Gen may arrive to Instagram sooner rather than later. Instagram's chief executive, Adam Mosseri, shared a brief video previewing the type of seamless AI edits that will soon be feasible, stating that the firm is "hoping to bring this to Instagram next year."

In the video, Mosseri claims that Meta is "working on some really exciting AI tools" for video artists. "You should be able to do anything you want with your videos," he jokes. "You should be able to change your outfit, or change the context in which you're sitting, or add a chain — whatever you can think of."

Mosseri's backdrop and attire change numerous times throughout the short clip, including a brief image in which he appears to be inspired by Muppets. Throughout the footage, the transitions appear to be rather fluid, with no evident AI artefacts. showing course, this won't always be the case once Movie Gen is out and films showing its skills aren't totally restricted by Meta. But if it works as well as Mosseri's preview video, it might open up new opportunities for Instagram creators.

It's probably not a coincidence that Meta is showcasing the feature just days after OpenAI made its video production model available to subscribers. Meta has often stated that it wants its AI assistant to be the "most used" in the world, and in an update issued today, the firm reported that Meta AI had "nearly" 600 million monthly users.

Unfortunately, Mosseri did not specify when Movie Gen features might be on Instagram, only that they will be available sometime in 2024. However, he stated that there would be "more to come" from the company.
