The boundary between human execution and machine assistance has shifted dramatically as OpenAI unveils Dots, a new class of fully autonomous artificial intelligence agents. Announced at the DevDay 2026 conference, this milestone marks a fundamental transition away from passive, prompt-dependent chatbots toward persistent digital colleagues. Powered by the advanced GPT-6 Astra language model, Dots are engineered to operate continuously, taking initiative and executing complex multi-step workflows without requiring constant human prompt engineering or micro-management.

Unlike traditional conversational tools that lie dormant until a user types a command, every Dot functions inside its own dedicated cloud computing environment equipped with an independent web browser. This isolated infrastructure allows the agent to navigate the internet, parse files, and interact seamlessly with software ecosystems. Through support for over four thousand third-party plugins, Dots can handle intricate business operations in the background. Users simply provide high-level directives, leaving the agent to process time-consuming intermediary tasks and request human intervention only when final sign-offs or critical evaluations are necessary.

Integration extends across everyday communication channels, enabling users to interact with their agents directly within desktop and mobile interfaces of ChatGPT, as well as enterprise communication hubs like Slack and Microsoft Teams, with cellular SMS integration currently under active development. A standout technological advancement introduced with this rollout is proactive research. When a Dot is not explicitly assigned an active task, it does not sit idle. Instead, operating under strict read-only permissions, it scans the shared workspace for opportunities to streamline operations. For instance, if a new file containing customer feedback lands in a folder, the agent independently reads the input, categorizes issues, and drafts a comprehensive summary alongside potential bug fixes, awaiting human authorization before executing any code changes.

The operational versatility of Dots spans numerous professional domains requiring intensive data processing and constant vigilance. Software engineers can delegate entire debugging workflows to an agent that monitors user reports, writes fix scripts, runs automated tests, and generates complete Pull Requests accompanied by video demonstrations verifying application functionality. Researchers can continuously feed experimental metrics to their agent, allowing it to re-run statistical analyses and update charts automatically. In sales and marketing, Dots track product specification updates in real time, automatically adjusting internal presentations, spreadsheets, and promotional materials to maintain brand alignment.

Security and privacy concerns remain paramount when granting machine systems autonomous agency. OpenAI addresses potential safety risks by enforcing strict sandbox architecture. Agents operate strictly within their isolated cloud environment unless a user explicitly grants permissions for local machine collaboration. Furthermore, an integrated auto-review framework evaluates every action against predefined Custom Rules before execution, preventing unauthorized external data sharing or account modifications. High-risk operations, such as password changes or financial transactions, are blocked by default and mandate explicit human confirmation, preserving absolute human oversight over sensitive activities.

For enterprise environments, OpenAI is introducing Specialist Dots designed to fulfill designated organizational roles rather than attaching to a single employee. These specialized agents possess distinct digital identities and manage domain-specific responsibilities across entire departments. Rollout is underway for Pro, Business Premium, and Enterprise plan subscribers, with the first autonomous agent included at no additional cost across supported regions.
