Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced that it will become the largest shareholder of Rainbow Robotics to accelerate the development of next-generation robots, including humanoid robots. Samsung had originally invested KRW 86.8 billion in the Korean company in 2023, acquiring a 14.7% stake, and is now exercising its option to increase its stake to 35%.

Through the partnership with Rainbow Robotics, Samsung will further strengthen its foundation in the robotics sector. Rainbow Robotics was founded in 2011 by researchers from the Humanoid Robot Research Center of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST), which developed the first biped robot in Korea, named "Hubo".

Combining Samsung Electronics' AI technology and software and Rainbow Robotics' expertise, the collaboration aims to accelerate the development of advanced, intelligent humanoid robots.

To strengthen the market for advanced robots, Samsung and Rainbow Robotics will establish a synergy council. This council will serve as a bridge for the growth of both companies through the development of future robotic technologies and key business strategies, as well as market demand analysis.

Samsung plans to leverage Rainbow Robotics' collaborative robots, dual control arms and autonomous mobile robots to automate tasks in production and supply chain. These robots can significantly improve their capabilities by learning and analyzing data and environmental variables through AI algorithms. Rainbow Robotics is expected to expand aggressively into international markets by leveraging Samsung's global sales network.

Establishment of Future Robotics Office

In addition, Samsung has established the Future Robotics Office, which will be under the direct supervision of the CEO. The office will focus on the development of robots, including humanoid robots, with the goal of ensuring competitiveness in new technologies that will advance current paradigms and make robotics a key growth driver.

Dr. Jun-Ho Oh, a founding member of Rainbow Robotics and professor emeritus at KAIST, will serve as a consultant to Samsung and head of the Future Robotics Office after leaving Rainbow Robotics. Dr. Oh, with his experience in academic and industry collaboration, will provide Samsung with his expertise in robotics technology and business.
