A few days after announcing its intentions to bring the Steam platform to Chromebooks, Google today proceeded to the official launch of the alpha version for some models and warns that in this early phase there will be several problems.

Specifically, Steam on Chrome OS requires at least 8GB of RAM and an 11th generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processor to run on Chrome OS. So far it is only supported by the following models:

  • Acer Chromebook 514 (CB514-1W)
  • Acer Chromebook 515 (CB515-1W)
  • Acer Chromebook Spin 713 (CP713-3W)
  • ASUS Chromebook Flip CX5 (CX5500)
  • ASUS Chromebook CX9 (CX9400)
  • HP Pro c640 G2 Chromebook
  • Lenovo 5i-14 Chromebook

Google has checked that the 48 games in the following list work well, but emphasizes that in some of them the graphics should be set to medium or low.

  • A Short Hike
  • Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition
  • Baba Is You
  • Bloons TD 6
  • Celeste
  • Cuphead
  • Darkest Dungeon
  • Dead Cells
  • Disco Elysium
  • Divinity: Original Sin 2
  • Don’t Starve Together

The Steam version for Chrome OS is based on Linux, not Windows, so it may be possible to reduce system requirements and add even more titles in the next more mature versions. Certainly Chromebooks are not gaming devices, but it is always good to know that you can take a break from work to play a game.
