Tecno unveils a stunning trifoldable smartphone concept

Huawei plans to introduce the world's first tri-folding phone next month, following repeated spottings in the wild. Xiaomi is reportedly developing a tri-folding phone.

Now, another Chinese manufacturer has joined the tri-folding smartphone battle. TECNO unveiled the Phantom Ultimate 2 tri-folding concept phone at the IFA 2024 event in Berlin, Germany.

What distinguishes the TECNO Phantom Ultimate 2 from other tri-folding phones is the company's remarkable engineering, which results in a gadget measuring only 11mm when folded. In comparison, the recently introduced Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 measures 12.1mm when folded.

The cameras, speakers, and charging port are located on the bulkier part of the TECNO Phantom Ultimate 2 concept phone. According to TECNO, they reached a 9mm thickness by developing a novel hinge design. The company also promises to employ "the smartphone industry's thinnest battery cover," measuring only 0.25mm. This cover is composed of "super-compressed Titan Advanced Fiber material."

The TECNO Phantom Ultimate 2's primary display is 6.48 inches, and when foldable, the inner display expands to 10 inches, having a 3K OLED panel with a 4:3 aspect ratio. In its unfolded state, the TECNO Phantom Ultimate 2 resembles an Android tablet.

The TECNO Phantom Ultimate 2 has an intriguing feature in that it supports multiple folding angles for greater versatility, as opposed to just folding and unfolding. TECNO has proven this versatility numerous times, including one occasion in which one-third of the phone lies flat on the table while the other two screens are positioned in a laptop-like configuration.

Another option has the device's two displays creating a triangle, with one screen lying flat on the bench, suitable for media consumption. TECNO has designed the software to make maximum use of the various folding configurations. The company revealed that both hinges were tested to withstand up to 300,000 folds.

Because it is a concept smartphone, TECNO has not given any specifications or stated when it would debut the phone. However, after seeing a little wave of tri-folding phones, it may not be long until TECNO launches its own tri-folding handset.
