Twitter has officially announced that it will make the Twitter API available completely free of charge for use by public interest accounts, such as for weather, transport and emergency announcements. The company clarified that the free use is only for certified government agencies or public agencies.

Last March the company announced new pricing for using the Twitter API, offering free usage for 1500 tweets/month to bots, while the base charge of $100/month offers just 3000 tweets/month. The prices and restrictions were deemed unaffordable by the majority of government agencies and departments, resulting in NWS (National Weather Services) and MTS (New York Metro Transit Service) announcing that they are discontinuing Twitter updates.

The change in Twitter's pricing policy has come in order to make the service profitable, but the moves made so far don't seem to be helping the situation much, only succeeding in angering ordinary users and driving away celebrities and government agencies.

It is no coincidence that after the withdrawal of the famous blue account authentication tick (you get it again if you subscribe to Twitter Blue), the majority of celebrities have rushed to either leave the once mighty social network or not pay.

It's worth noting that Twitter's founder and former CEO, Jack Dorsey, recently said that Elon Musk's choice to lead the company was a rather poor one.
