X rethinks creator payouts with focus on original content

X officially pivots away from its previous ad-revenue-sharing framework in favor of a revamped payout architecture. Under the new Original Content Rewards model, the platform aims to fundamentally alter how content creators monetize their presence, placing a premium on authentic, first-hand posts while actively discouraging artificial engagement tactics that have plagued the platform’s comment sections for years.

When X first introduced its Creator Revenue Sharing initiative, the goal was straightforward: empower online voices to build sustainable revenue streams directly through their digital footprint. However, the system's reliance on ad impressions generated within response threads inadvertently fostered unintended consequences. A vast ecosystem of accounts began engaging in reply farming, deliberately publishing provocative, misleading, or outrage-inducing statements under high-traffic posts. Because each subsequent reply boosted ad exposures, creators were financially incentivized to spark toxic debates rather than cultivate meaningful discourse, leading to a noticeable decline in conversation quality.

To address these systemic flaws, the Original Content Rewards program shifts the financial focus from response threads back to the primary post. Monitization will no longer be determined by ad views within replies, but rather by the total engagement generated from verified X Premium subscribers. The revised algorithmic framework evaluates parameters such as organic reach, reposts, bookmarks, likes, and total dwell time spent by paying members. Crucially, advanced artificial intelligence filters have been integrated to detect unoriginal content, automatically disqualifying accounts that aggregate, scrape, or reupload third-party media without adding substantial original commentary.

This strategic pivot carries distinct implications for regional markets, including Greek creators navigating the platform's changing landscape. Because payout calculations are now tied directly to interactions from X Premium users—a demographic with relatively lower penetration in Greece compared to larger global markets—creators can no longer rely solely on high volume impressions from free accounts. To maintain financial viability, local content producers must recalibrate their approach by either crafting high-value niche content tailored to subscribed domestic audiences or expanding their reach toward international X Premium users. Transactions will continue through the Stripe infrastructure, maintaining established payout thresholds while raising the bar for content originality.
