The YouTube development team has officially announced the launch of the PiP (picture-in-picture) feature for all iOS device users, allowing iPhone and iPad owners to close the YouTube app when watching a video and continue watching it in a small pop-up window while simultaneously using other applications on their device.
YouTube's PiP mode was previously only available to YouTube Premium subscribers in the US, but now the feature is being rolled out worldwide. Note, however, that playing music will still require a Premium subscription.
In the announcement, Google admits that it had to spend a lot of time testing PiP mode in order to be sure it would work properly. To use it, just select a video and then exit YouTube for other destinations on your iPhone or iPad.
The rollout is happening gradually, so it may take a few days before you see it on your iOS device. Also note that you should be using iOS 15 / iPadOS 15 or later.
