Apple has officially rolled out iOS 18.5, just days after releasing its release candidate version, bringing a host of security updates, user interface options, and bug fixes. The update is available for iPhone XS and newer models and can be downloaded via Settings > General > Software Update.
One of the most user-visible features in iOS 18.5 is the option to revert the native Mail app back to its previous interface. Users can access this by opening the Mail app, tapping the three-dot menu in the top right corner, and selecting the classic List View, which displays emails chronologically. Additionally, users can choose to show or hide contact photos next to emails, enhancing customization and readability.
Apple emphasizes the importance of updating to iOS 18.5 due to its extensive security patches. One critical vulnerability (CVE-2025-31251) involved the AppleJPEG image format. A specially crafted media file could cause an app to crash. Apple addressed this by enhancing input sanitization, and the fix is extended across several devices, including iPads ranging from the iPad Pro 11-inch to the iPad mini 5th generation.
Another significant flaw (CVE-2025-31214) was discovered in the Apple C1 modem—a component exclusive to the new iPhone 16e. This bug could potentially allow an attacker in a privileged network position to intercept network traffic. While Apple has not confirmed any active exploitation, the vulnerability underscores the critical role of timely software updates.
iOS 18.5 also patches a Core Bluetooth vulnerability (CVE-2025-31212) that could allow apps to access sensitive user data without proper permission. This fix applies to a wide range of iPhone and iPad models, further reinforcing Apple’s push for user privacy.
Another notable bug (CVE-2025-31225) affected Spotlight Search, where call history from deleted apps would still appear in search results. While not considered a severe security threat, this flaw posed a privacy concern that has now been resolved.
Beyond visual preferences and functionality, iOS 18.5 is a security-centric release. With multiple vulnerabilities addressed and new controls for the Mail app, the update enhances both usability and device protection. Apple strongly encourages users to install the update as soon as possible to safeguard their devices and personal data.
