NFC (Near Field Communication) technology is used by Google Wallet, an app that enables users to use their credit or debit cards to make purchases at point-of-sale (PoS) terminals using their smartphones. NFC is a feature that is present on the majority of mobile phones in developed nations like the US. However, there are extremely few cellphones with NFC in poor nations like Brazil. Because of this, Google Wallet usage in these areas is constrained. Google, however, has managed to get past this difficulty.
The tech juggernaut revealed that it would soon include QR code payments to Google Wallet in Brazil at Google for Brazil 2023. People will be able to use this functionality to pay with their credit or debit cards at PoS terminals even with phones that lack NFC. It seems pretty simple to use this functionality. People must first link their credit or debit card to the Google Wallet app before they can complete a transaction by just using their phone's camera to scan a QR code that is shown on a point-of-sale (PoS) machine.
Google said that "in the coming months" QR code payments will be available in Google Wallet in Brazil. Given that the internet giant will need to collaborate with PoS machine makers, banks, and government agencies to integrate the feature, that is a fairly quick schedule for its distribution. Google will probably extend the QR code payments capability to other locations after it launches it in Brazil. But before doing so, it ought to roll out Google Wallet in nations like India where Apple intends to introduce Apple Pay.
