Most messaging applications, such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger and Google Messages offer the user the ability to see if someone has read the message they sent. However, in some of them you will have to enable the relevant function from the application settings.

Google Messages

The application usually comes pre-installed on Android smartphones, although on some devices from Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, etc. you may only see the corresponding service of the companies. So, you can download it from the Google Play store.

To activate the message reading function, you should follow the steps below:

  • Open the application
  • Tap on your account icon in the upper right corner
  • Select Message Settings
  • Select Chat features
  • Turn on the Send read receipts switch

After performing the above actions you will now see the status Delivered when your message reaches the recipient and the status Read when he reads it.

WhatsApp

Here things are quite different and there are not a few people who get confused with ticks. One tick means that the message has reached the company's servers, two gray ticks means that the message has reached the recipient's device and two blue ticks means that the message has been read.

WhatsApp offers the option to hide these receipts from your account, but if you disable it then you won't be able to see the respective statuses either. The feature is enabled by default, but in case you had disabled it in the past you can find it with the following steps:

  • Open the application
  • Tap on the 3 vertical dots at the top right
  • Select Settings
  • Go to the Privacy menu
  • Turn on the Read receipts switch.
