Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced that the Quantum Dot (QD) film used in its QD televisions has received validation of compliance with the RoHS directive on the restriction of hazardous substances. The validation and verification that it does not contain cadmium comes from the global independent certification institute, Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS).
SGS, based in Geneva, Switzerland, is a global leader in testing and certification, providing services to ensure that organisations meet rigorous quality and safety standards across a range of industries, including electronics, food and the environment.
In addition to the certification received from SGS for the cadmium-free technology in Samsung's Quantum Dot membrane, the company's compliance with the EU RoHS directive provides consumers/users with added comfort while watching content on TV.
"Samsung's Quantum Dot TVs are made with safe technology that complies with restrictions on hazardous substances while delivering unparalleled picture quality," said Taeyong Son, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics' Visual Display Division. "Achieving SGS certification fully validates the safety of our products. With this recognition, we are committed to continuously developing sustainable display technologies. Although cadmium-free technology is not new, we are pleased to have third-party testing certification."
Samsung has successfully created cadmium-free nanocrystalline material and has registered around 150 patents for this technology. With this expertise and technology, the company has ushered in an era of Quantum Dot TVs made with materials that do not contain hazardous substances.
