Imagine scrolling through your feed and stumbling upon a reel that instantly makes you laugh, moves you, or teaches you something completely new — even if it was filmed thousands of miles away in a language you don’t speak. This is the kind of borderless digital experience Meta is striving to create.
In its ongoing mission to connect people through creativity, Meta is pushing its translation technology further than ever. After launching bidirectional English–Spanish translation for Facebook and Instagram creators in August, the company is now adding two more languages to the mix: Hindi and Portuguese. This latest update means millions of users can enjoy reels created in different corners of the world without missing the meaning behind the words. And Meta promises that more languages are on the way.
The expansion marks a major step in Meta’s journey toward making online content accessible to everyone, regardless of where it’s produced or what language it’s in. Since unveiling AI-powered translations in 2024, Meta has been steadily developing tools that make global sharing feel effortless — and this rollout brings that vision closer to reality.
The move didn’t happen in isolation. Creators themselves have been a driving force behind Meta’s approach to translation. Many have expressed a desire to connect with audiences beyond their linguistic or geographic boundaries, and their feedback has directly influenced how the technology works.
Now, with Meta AI, creators can translate and dub their reels instantly, removing one of the biggest obstacles to reaching international viewers. This system doesn’t just add subtitles; it gives content a voice — literally. By offering multilingual translations between English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Hindi, Meta is bridging some of the most active Reels markets across both Facebook and Instagram.
Best of all, this feature is completely free. Facebook creators with over 1,000 followers, as well as all public Instagram accounts in regions where Meta AI is available, can take advantage of the translation tools. The company hopes that by making translation accessible to more creators, it will help level the playing field for content makers everywhere.
Influencer Roberto Nickson summed it up best: “I can’t stress how big of an opportunity Meta AI presents for creators. What was previously prohibitively expensive and reserved for only the top 1% of creators is now widely available for all. It is the great equalizer.”
Meta’s translation tool isn’t just about swapping words between languages — it’s about preserving authenticity. The system uses advanced voice synthesis to replicate a creator’s tone and vocal style in another language, ensuring the translated reel still sounds like the original person behind the camera.
For those who want an even more lifelike experience, Meta AI includes an optional lip-syncing feature. This technology aligns the creator’s mouth movements with the translated audio, making it appear as if they’re genuinely speaking in the new language. The result is a seamless, immersive viewing experience that keeps the creator’s personality intact while expanding their reach.
Meta knows that personal preference matters, especially when it comes to how users consume content. That’s why the company has designed simple controls that let viewers customize their translation experience. Every translated reel is clearly marked with the label “Translated with Meta AI,” so users always know when they’re watching AI-generated content.
If someone prefers to experience reels in their original form, they can easily toggle off translations by selecting “Don’t translate” in the audio and language settings. Users can also manage their preferred languages on Facebook and Instagram, giving them complete control over how global their feed feels.
